A new AI model called GigaTIME, which Microsoft recently released and made open-source, can extract thousands of dollars' worth of tumor insights from a simple $10 tissue slide. Previously, this analysis needed costly lab work and days of processing.

The specifics:

Using 40 million cell samples from Providence Health, the model matched basic slides with sophisticated immune system imaging.

In order to create a virtual library of 300,000 detailed tumor photos from 24 distinct cancer kinds, researchers tested it on more than 14,000 cancer patients.

Over 1,200 patterns connecting immune activity to variables like cancer stage and patient survival were discovered by the "virtual population" research.

AI is now able to extract valuable insights from regular data in cancer research that, only a few years ago, would have needed expensive and time-consuming laboratory effort. GigaTIME is a component of an AI-driven trend toward models that enable population-scale analysis to be both quick and inexpensive enough to impact treatment choices.
