Issues with Ive's AI device and OpenAI

According to a recent Financial Times report, OpenAI and Jony Ive are apparently having design and technological issues with their screen-free AI device, which could cause delays and postpone its introduction past the anticipated 2026 release date.

The specifics: According to reports, the team is having trouble striking a balance between the AI assistant's conversational approach and beneficial involvement without coming out as overly chatty.

Another obstacle is compute infrastructure, as OAI lacks the cloud capacity needed to operate competing gadgets like Google Home and Amazon's Alexa.

In May, OpenAI paid $6.5 billion to acquire Ive's io studio, hiring more than 20 former Apple hardware veterans in addition to new hires from Meta's Quest and smart glasses teams.

The gadget will be "always on" and "about the size of a smartphone," according to sources who spoke to FT. It is intended to be placed on a user's desk or table.

A sleeping behemoth in the AI hardware market, OpenAI's gadget ambitions are still awaiting their breakthrough release. However, even the leader in AI appears to be having trouble with the design and operation of a product that has the potential to fundamentally alter how we use technology.
