Anthropic's first 2026 Economic Index
Anthropic released its fourth Economic Index, which delves deeply into 2M Claude conversations and shows that most AI use still resembles cooperation rather than replacement, with humans still performing the majority of activities.

The specifics:

Approximately 1/4 of work in over 50% of all occupations are handled by AI, up from 36% last year; yet, less than 10% of businesses are seeing complete role displacement.

AI speeds up work requiring high school abilities nine times quicker and college-level tasks twelve times faster, with Claude's gains growing for challenging use cases.

Anthropic's data indicates a 50% success rate for assignments up to 19 hours, demonstrating Claude's increasing capacity to manage larger work.

Although pure automation-related jobs have been surpassed by augmentation (learning, feedback, and iteration), coding tasks continue to dominate Claude utilization.

Gains in productivity are occurring quickly, but the fear that AI will eventually replace human labor is not supported by the statistics (yet). A generation of young talent may be trapped in an entirely new economic reality if AI takes over the tedious tasks often employed for training and experience. This is a problem for junior employees.
