Teen controls for ChatGPT are released via OpenAI.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has revealed new safeguards for adolescent ChatGPT users, including automated age recognition and kid-friendly versions of the assistant.
The specifics:
OpenAI is developing technology that uses usage patterns to determine users' ages, switching to adolescent restrictions when in doubt.
Account connection, customisation, and alerts to a parent or authorities in the event of a projected mental health crisis will all be made possible via new parental controls.
Even for innovative purposes, teen accounts will also restrict graphic and self-harming discussions; Altman says he doesn't expect everyone to accept the trade-offs.
"Some of (OpenAI's) principles are in conflict," Altman said, adding that the new rulings seek to strike a balance between privacy, safety, and freedom.
Why it's important These actions follow a summer filled with alarming news reports about AI's role in mental health issues, as well as user lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny. However, with so many chatbot alternatives (including private and open-source models) and workarounds, this is a problem that isn't going away quickly.
